Pulse
When you first enter Heartbeat you will be brought to the Pulse page. The pulse page is driven by student responses to interactions within their view of Heartbeat. In order to see any data here, you will need to populate your Group with students and those students will have had to answer a few interactions. Let's take a look at how to populate groups because without groups there is no data!
(shown below is the pulse view with student pulses)
Groups
To add students to a group from your teacher analytics page, click on "Groups" on the top banner. Enter a name for your group, and click "+Create New Group." Here is a quick video on groups for you visual learners.
You will be brought to your group details page. From here you can click "Add Teachers" to have co-teachers on your group and "Add Students" to populate the group. Both of these features work identically. There is no need for the added user (teacher or student) to accept any invitation. Once you add them you're all set! As soon as the students in your group start answering interactions in Heartbeat you will be able to see their pulses (scales) on your analytics page.
Let's take another look at the analytics page and its features...
Navigation Bar
At the top of the screen, you will see the navigation bar. Here you can access your dashboard, pulse, students, groups, and handraises. Click the Shmoop logo on the left to return to the Shmoop Homepage, and log out of your account using the account dropdown menu on the right.
Next, we will review "Filters", the scale names listed under the "Pulse", and the "Usage Data" as well as any features hidden within each of these sections. Let's address Pulse first. This is where all of the amazing student Heartbeat data lives!
Scales and Factors
After you have created your groups and populated them with your students you will start to see a variety of different Heartbeat scales populate the center of your analytics page as your students begin interacting with Heartbeat. The total number of Heartbeat factors you see will depend on how much interaction your students have had in heartbeat, but this number will cap out at 120 different individual scales. Each one of these scales is unique to the group you are viewing and the students within your group. You can edit this view with the filters section but we still have a few sweet things to cover before we get there.
Each of these scales will show a distribution graph (see image below). Each line represents a different student and where they land on this scale. When you click "see insights and details" you will be given a whole wealth of information about this particular factor and how it affects your students! Also, note the "hide" and "favorite" buttons in the image below. This will allow you to build custom views of specific factors to make all of the data more digestible. More on that later.
Insights and Details
Now that we know what these factors and scales mean let's take a look at what we see when we click "See Insights and Details"! You will notice three main sections "Interaction Response Graph", "Insights", and "Actions". We can tackle these in order. The interaction response graph will show each student on the scale and where their responses put them on the scale (image a). The three different scale points will deliver a different "insight" section depending on which one is clicked (image a). The insights section will explain more about the factor in question through "they feel" statements and further normalizing the factor at hand (image b). The final "actions" section will lend helpful action items a teacher can supplement into their lessons to help address these factors that are common among their group! Be sure to thoroughly explore the insights and details section. Your students can view their own scales and insights and details. This empowers your students in their own journey with SEL!

Filters
Filters are your friend! We designed the filtering section to be extremely intuitive. Here you can select which groups, students, scales, and saved items show up on your analytics page. We encourage you to save scales so you can build custom views of a few scales of your choosing to address with your group using our actions for those scales. This is a great way to make the data reported to your analytics page more digestible!
Usage Data
Usage Data is where your mind will be blown! You can view the power of Heartbeats reach at a glance. The usage data will change depending on the filters you have selected but you can view individual student usage to all students in your group and everything in between. The amount of time it would take you to gather this much SEL data on your own would be impossible without the power of Heartbeat!
Dashboard
The dashboard is home to high level Heartbeat data at a glance. We have sorted the dashboard into 4 columns.
Superpowers
Pulses where students feel they experience success.
Challenges
Pulses where students may feel they experience challenge or difficulty.
My Favorite Pulses
View your favorites pulses at a glance!
We miss these students
Students who haven't logged in, in more than 7 days.
All of these columns can be filtered by the same filter box used on pulses as well.
Students
The students page showcases the usage of the students in your groups, and tracks trends in their interaction count and time spent.
Handraises
Lastly, the handraises page allows you to view handraises from your students. This page also allows you to track students you have contacted following a handraise. Learn more about handraises here!
Report a Bug
Lastly, you will also see our "Report a Bug" button. This little guy is your best way to let us know if you encounter any bugs or issues with Heartbeat.
If you ever want to leave Heartbeat to switch to another Shmoop product click the "Shmoop" logo in the top left-hand corner or click Account and then "schools.shmoop.com."
