Here's the quick answer: teachers and students can have subscriptions on their own, without being attached to each other. If a student is working alone on a student subscription, though, they will only receive grades for auto-graded activities, quizzes, and tests.
So if you're a teacher and you just want to utilize Shmoop's premium resources as inspiration or as a resource in your real-life classroom, head over to our Plans page and grab a Teacher Subscription!
Similarly, if you have a student who just needs some extra Test Prep practice or is interested in learning more about '60's History Through Music (cool kid), but they don't need teacher monitoring, they can get their own subscription and do their own thing.
BUT.
Yeah, there's always a but! If you want to be able to monitor your student's progress, you'll need to both have subscriptions. You'll need to purchase a subscription for your student and then invite them to join your teacher subscription. And since we've thought of everything, here’s an article that walks you through how to do just that!
